Today was the exact day where the one and only obvious thing to do would be to run across the yard and take a flying leap into a pile of leaves, and jump around in them, flinging them into the air over and over again and then finally collapsing on the ground and staring up at the empty trees and the clear blue sky.

In my head I can still do stuff like this.

"I don't know what to say to you when you say this kind of thing." That's what he said to me.

What do you say? You say, Lara, you lived in Africa. Who cares about some silly pile of leaves?

"That's bullshit. I'm not saying that."

Well. At least we have an understanding, then. And he offered to pick me up and toss me in a leaf pile, should we find one (we went for a walk today.) I said I doubt he can pick me up right now. He said maybe he'll do it next fall.

And I stopped, and I waited for that moment were the grand realization dawned.

It didn't. Cause this isn't the movies and this isn't a story and I'm just myself.
