Music Meme #7
Aug. 30th, 2010 04:13 pmDay 07 - A song that reminds you of a specific event
This one isn't exactly a fond memory - well... actually, it is, and it isn't. So, I can play this on the bass guitar. And I am pretty sure anyone who plays any type of guitar - or string instrument - can probably say the same. And I have played with countless other people in countless other situations, and let me tell you, this riff gets randomly played A LOT. By me or by anyone else. It's just a thing.
So, back when I used to go to church, I was in the praise and worship band. You know... like in the movie "Saved!" except it was more of a "real" band, you know, more than just a few keyboards. And it wasn't all girls. And this was my first experience playing in a group that was less structured than, say... like a wind ensemble or something that I might have done at school. And I learned SO MUCH from being involved in this, too. It's had a massive impact on my life.
But of course all we played were praise and worship songs... except not really. Because outside of our designated practice time, of course everyone would start playing other things. Smashing Pumpkin's "Disarm" was a big one too. The Powers That Be (not God, I mean like the adults in charge) never really said anything to us about playing non-Christian music IN THE CHURCH, and I really always assumed that they were so involved with OMG EVERYTHING CHRISTIAN, you know, Christian rock, Christian movies, Christian books... that they just didn't recognize what we were playing, no matter what it was or what it was associated with.
But... one day... when I was feeling SO COOL and just having a blast working on, you know, music stuff... we got in A LOT of trouble for goofing off too much. I mean I didn't think we were really being that bad, honestly. But I think that the adults involved were on particularly short fuses that day for other unrelated reasons. So... our goofing off, with this song specifically (and I still don't think the problem came from this particular song, just that we were fooling around in the first place) caused a MAJOR practice to be flat-out cancelled mid-way through, right before a BIG concert at a BIG event, and it was a BADLY NEEDED practice.
So pretty much I went from feeling like THE shit to just... feeling like shit. And this song always reminds me of that cancelled rehearsal and the concert that followed. It's a huge event in MY memory. Sometimes I wonder if it's just a vague little blip in the memory of everyone else who was involved, or if it was a major thing to all of us. It was pretty major to me.
