Yes, Well...

Ok so today... today I decided that I'd like to begin my new (unpaid) internet career as a producer of podfictions. I read fanfiction all the time and while I am writing one, um, I doubt very much I'll ever share it, and sometimes I feel a little bad about take take taking and never giving anything back (well, maybe some reviews, but my reviews usually suck too). Lately I've been listening to a lot of podfics and realized - hey, I like to talk. I love to talk! I could produce a podfic! So I messaged a few authors and asked permission to record, and received said permission, and got started.

Uh... didn't sound right. So did not sound right. What's the problem? Well, after much deliberation, I realized the trouble - Harry, well, he's British. So is everyone else in his universe. And I? I have a lovely American accent. That's what sounds so off. Well then. I'll just have to read in British then. Simple enough, right?

Ha ha. Wrong. I dunno why I thought I could pull a consistent British accent out of my ass like that. Ok, so, I watch a lot of BBC shows. And that's about... yep, that's about it. So. I started reading in my "British" accent, stopped after a few paragraphs, and then listened. Well. My "British" accent? Yeah. It sounds South African. Apparently, I can do a very decent South African accent.

Which doesn't help. So I guess I'll be spending some time working on my British accent. Expect me to post samples and ask your opinions on just how real or fake it sounds.

ALSO.

I picked up three boxes from the post office this morning. They're from my mom. Meaning, apparently my dad gave her my PO box number. They're full of all my medical records. So... I'm not really sure what to make of this. I'm not sure what she's trying to say here, or if she's even trying to say anything. I can hear her voice so clearly in my head, saying different things, saying "you're an adult now, I don't need to store these for you, you need to have these with you, these are your responsibilities" or maybe saying "I don't want this stuff cluttering up my house, this isn't my problem anymore, you take them, be thankful I'm not just throwing them out" or "I don't have to do this for you, I don't have to keep these, you need to learn to take care of your own things, I don't have to help you with this."

I don't know. I've been thinking about what things of mine are in her house and what she might be trying to get rid of and why and what I'd ask for and what I'd tell her to just pitch - my dad is kinda playing go-between here so I've really got to be clear and concise about what I do or don't want, because either stuff I do want will be thrown out or stuff I don't want will end up here with me. But my medical records are something that didn't even occur to me. Of course I should have them here. Of course she isn't under any obligation to store them for me. But I didn't even think of that.

Haha, I feel your pain. I wanted to do some reading for Doctor Who fanfiction and then realized that my British accent was complete rubbish.

On the bright side, you could do podfic for that old Disney TV movie, The Color of Friendship

British accent

The hard thing about faking a British accent is that there are so many! Some people equate a British accent with Cockney, which just makes me die inside. Try studying other fake British accents. Eliza Doolittle from the movie "My Fair Lady" sounds pretty fake in the beginning, especially when she sings. It gets better as she becomes more of a lady, but still.

Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer has the best fake accent I've ever heard. I thought he was actually British. It's more of a slang, tough guy accent rather than a JK Rowling narrator accent, but it's still REALLY good. While you're watching, Giles (on the other hand) is real. Upper crust real, which is pretty funny if you know his history, fka "Ripper."

Did you know that Eliza speaking and Eliza singing are two different actresses? When she sings it's a voice-over.

My trouble is that my fake accent migrates around. I'm trying for a regular old London-generic-Estuary accent and then I tend to slip into Received and from there... right back down to SA, lol. I mean, I can even pull off a Manchester-ish accent for like... a few sentences, but the longer I keep it up the less convincing it becomes!

Obviously it's possible to master this cause professional actors do it all the time. I think I'm just going to be doing a lot of practicing!
